Origins "Li'l Liza Jane" was first published in by Sherman, Clay & Co of San Francisco, California as a composition by Ada de Lachau. It was described as a "Southern dialect song". The tune was featured as entr'acte entertainment during the Broadway show Come Out of the Kitchen.. The song's origins, however, seem to go back even earlier.

So why don't you call me Little Liza Jane You've got that body You've got that frame So why don't you call me Little Liza Jane Girl I got it bad for you There ain't nothin' I won't do Just one kiss and I'll never be the same Little Liza Jane, oh little Liza Jane Now you've heard my story.

Oh Liza poor girl Oh Liza Jane Oh Liza poor girl She died on the train. I went up on the mountain To give my horn a blow And every girl in the countryside Said yonder comes my beau. When I was a little boy I liked to go in swimming Now I am a bigger boy I like to go with women. I wish I had a candy box To put my sweetheart in I’d take her out.

It has become a perennial standard both as a song and an instrumental in traditional jazz, folk music, and bluegrass, and versions have repeatedly appeared in other genres including rock and roll.
